Columbus's Holiday Calendar: Early-December Events and Museum Hours

Drive through downtown Columbus in late November and you'll see flyers for Christmas events. Garland goes up around the square, the Chamber's calendar fills with red and green icons, and business windows get wreaths. The main downtown holiday events take place during the first week of December: the parade and Ladies Night Out are two days apart, while the Santa Claus Museum adds Saturday hours through the month.

Two Early-December Events

The Lighted Christmas Parade runs on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which puts it on December 1 this year. It starts at First Baptist Church, at the corner of Milam and Harbert, and heads north up Spring Street until it reaches Courthouse Square at 400 Spring. The floats roll at 6 p.m., and once they've passed, the square holds its tree lighting, caroling, free photos with Santa, and hot cocoa and cookies for anyone who stuck around.

Two days later, on Thursday, December 3, Ladies Night Out takes over the same downtown blocks with a completely different purpose. The Columbus Chamber of Commerce started the event in 2017 to pull holiday shoppers into town instead of the highway outlet malls, and it has grown into the county's biggest shopping night, running from about 4 to 9 p.m. Shoppers buy a commemorative wine glass at the Stafford Opera House, the 1886 building that still anchors the square, and use it to sample wine at merchants and vendor booths scattered across town. A Jolly Trolley runs riders between stops that are outside easy walking distance, and Santa's Bingo gives shoppers a reason to visit two or three dozen participating businesses instead of just one.

The 2025 lineup gives a sense of how local this gets. Vendors that year included Chicken Scratch Design Co., Chessdale Acres Apiaries, Cummins Creek Vineyard, Loblolly Cellars, Woody's Authentic TX Jerky, and Gran Gran's Kitchen, set up around the Courthouse Square alongside longtime Columbus businesses. It is not a franchise holiday market. It is Colorado County selling to Colorado County, with a wine glass in hand.

What Happens If You Only Go To One

If you catch the parade and skip Ladies Night Out, you get carols, a tree lighting, and kids taking photos with Santa in front of the courthouse. It is free, it is short, and it is built around families who want one evening downtown before the weather turns.

If you catch Ladies Night Out and skip the parade, you get an entirely different Columbus. Wine tastings replace hot cocoa. Boutiques and vendor tents replace the parade route. The trolley replaces walking with kids in tow. Adults come from Columbus and the surrounding ranches to shop local instead of driving to Katy or Sealy.

A December Stop at the Santa Claus Museum

After the first week, the Santa Claus Museum at 604 Washington Street remains a holiday stop. For most of the year it opens only on Fridays, from 1 to 5 p.m., with other visits by appointment through the Chamber. In December, it adds Saturday hours on the same 1-to-5 p.m. schedule.

The collection itself is the reason it's worth the extra Saturday. It began with Mary Elizabeth Hopkins, who received a papier-mâché Santa for her first Christmas in 1913 and kept adding to the collection for the rest of her life. By the time she died in 1990, she had gathered about 2,500 pieces. Her husband donated the collection to a local preservation group, and it now lives in a small house near the courthouse under the Columbus Historical Preservation Trust, grown to somewhere around 4,000 items and billed as the only Santa Claus museum in the South. There's a letters-to-Santa mailbox on the porch, a Norman Rockwell piece, and a complete set of Haddon Sundblom's Coca-Cola Santa illustrations. It is a two-room house, not a tourist complex, and that scale is part of what makes it work.

Planning a December Visit to Columbus
